Commissioners' CornerI am pleased to announce that West Norriton Board of Commissioners is creating an Arts and Culture Commission (ACC). The National Endowment for the Arts stated, “participation in cultural activity directly correlates to an increase in civic engagement, including voting, volunteering, and charitable work”. Arts organizations stimulate local economics by engaging surrounding communities which will support local business. The Arts can be a catalyst for development. Think about the possibilities for the West Main Street redevelopment corridor. A community with cultural activities makes for a more desirable destination for home buyers. The Arts can define a community’s identity. The Board of Commissioners wants to develop, and deliver, cultural arts programs, art in public spaces, and consistent aesthetic sensibilities for the benefit of the residents of West Norriton Township. The creative arts include, but are not limited to art, music, theater, and dance. The ACC will provide feedback and advice to the Board of Commissioners regarding the Creative Arts in West Norriton Township. The ACC will develop strategies to integrate Creative Arts into the community. Members will advise the appropriate local government agencies, including the West Norriton Township Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation Board, and the elected governing body, on proposals regarding Creative Arts programs and projects. The ACC will embrace diversity and inclusion. Lastly, the ACC members will maintain a high level of integrity on each and every project. The ACC will consist of five members appointed by the Board of Commissioners. Members will serve terms that vary in length up three years. This is a volunteer position. Meetings will be held monthly in the West Norriton Township building located at 1630 W Marshall Street, Jeffersonville, PA 19403. Members must be residents of West Norriton Township. I’m an Art school grad (Minneapolis College of Art and Design) and have spent my career as a commercial artist. If you have a background in the Arts, or an interest in the Arts, we want to hear from you. I can assure you that being involved with your Township is a rewarding experience. If you have questions, feel free to reach out to me at psmock@wntwp.com. Application for positions on the Commission will be via the West Norriton Township website www.westnorritontwp.org. We hope to begin officially meeting in the next few months. Dates and times to be determined.

News from the EACWest Norriton Environmental Advisory Commission (EAC) is taking part in the “Mayor’s Monarch Pledge” a program of the National Wildlife Federation. The EAC will be building the first monarch garden this spring at the Township Building. Sadly, the monarch population is in decline. Western monarchs have declined by more than 99% and Eastern monarchs have declined by around 80% due to climate change and the disappearance of milkweed. The EAC is hoping to revive the monarch population in our area. If you have any questions, would like more information, or want to volunteer, please contact the EAC at EAC@wntwp.com .

Jeffersonville Golf ClubConstruction of New Pro-Shop and Banquet FacilityThe Board of Commissioners engaged the services of KCBA Architects for the design of a new Banquet Facility and Pro-Shop at the Jeffersonville Golf Club. The new facility will replace the current facility that pre-dates the golf course.
West Norriton applied for and received two grant awards from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) totaling $2 million dollars to aid in the construction of the new facility. RACP is a Commonwealth grant program administered by the Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects. RACP projects are authorized in the Redevelopment Assistance section of a Capital Budget Itemization Act, have a regional or multi-jurisdictional impact, and generate substantial increases or maintain current levels of employment, tax revenues, or other measures of economic activity. RACP projects are state-funded projects that cannot obtain primary funding under other state programs.
Given the condition of the banquet and pro-shop facility, the Township engaged the services of a structural engineer to determine the safety of the building. Based on the results of the survey, the building was condemned, and emergency authorization approved to begin demolition of the facility. The pro-shop was relocated to the former radio station building on the property, and a new half-way house is being constructed to provide concessions and restrooms until the new facility is completed.
The Board of Commissioner authorized township staff to place the project out for bid. Once those bids are received, they will be reviewed and awarded to the contractor who meets the requirements of the bidding process.

Office of the Fire MarshalAddress VisibilityThe importance of having an address number on your home can not be emphasized strongly enough. We are asking our residents to take a moment to look at your house number. Make sure your numbers are clearly visible from the street. It will help our first responders find you easier and faster in the event of an emergency. In an effort to serve you better, we are requesting that residents and business owners cooperate in posting their street numbers on their homes and/or mailboxes. A street number should be placed at the end of the driveway should your home not be easily visible from the street. Suggestions: - The numbers on residences should be at least 4 inches high.
- Numbers should be a contrasting color to the background.
- Numbers should be placed on, above, or at the side of the main entrance, so that they can be easily detected from the street.
- Avoid placing numbers in unusual spots (e.g. decor on porch) and above your garage door.
- If the entrance is more than 50 feet from the street, or cannot be seen from the street, a second set of numbers should also be displayed on the mailbox or on a post at the street or end of the drive. Remember: your mail-carrier always comes the same way. Fire trucks, ambulances and police cars may come from any direction, so be sure to mark BOTH sides of your mailbox or mark your house number in such a way that it may be easily seen, no matter which direction they are approaching.
- Reflective numbers are highly recommended.
You never know when you may be the next one to call 911 for an emergency. Be sure your house number is posted AND VISIBLE FROM THE ROAD so you can be found as quickly as possible as every minute counts.
