The West Norriton Police Department has had a sworn officer assigned to Norristown Area High School since January of 2009. The school resource officer (SRO) has a diverse role in the school community and has many duties and responsibilities. The three major roles of our SRO include: law enforcement officer, law-related counselor, and law-related educator. In addition, the officer works in collaboration with the school and the community as a resource for safety and security issues.
Impact
The school resource officer position has been funded through a Safe Schools / Healthy Students grant. The SRO has had a positive effect on the learning environment by mentoring and educating those who are in the school community. By being an active participant in classrooms, trainings, and extra-curricular activities the SRO has made positive community relations with those who have ownership in the school and its surrounding community.
